Connect an AI Assistant

Connect an AI assistant to your site and manage your offloaded media in plain words. This uses the WordPress Abilities API and the free MCP Adapter plugin.

What you need

  • Advanced Media Offloader 4.7.0 or later.
  • WordPress 6.9 or later. On older versions, the plugin works as before, but AI assistants cannot use it.
  • An administrator account.
  • The free MCP Adapter plugin.

There is nothing to turn on in the plugin settings.

Set it up

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the standard way AI assistants connect to apps. MCP Adapter makes your site’s abilities available to any assistant that supports MCP, such as Claude or Cursor.

  1. Install and activate MCP Adapter from Plugins → Add New.
  2. Create an Application Password for an administrator. Go to Users → Profile and scroll down to Application Passwords.
  3. Add your site to your AI assistant. Most assistants use a JSON config like the one below. Replace the site address, username, and Application Password with your own.
  4. Restart the assistant and ask it a question.
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "wordpress": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@automattic/mcp-wordpress-remote@latest"],
      "env": {
        "WP_API_URL": "https://example.com/wp-json/mcp/mcp-adapter-default-server",
        "WP_API_USERNAME": "your-username",
        "WP_API_PASSWORD": "your-application-password"
      }
    }
  }
}

Running WordPress on your own computer with WP-CLI? You can connect without an Application Password:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "wordpress": {
      "command": "wp",
      "args": [
        "--path=/path/to/your/wordpress/site",
        "mcp-adapter",
        "serve",
        "--server=mcp-adapter-default-server",
        "--user=admin"
      ]
    }
  }
}

For other assistants and the latest setup steps, see the MCP Adapter documentation.

Things you can ask

  • “Is my cloud storage connected?”
  • “How many files are not offloaded yet?”
  • “Which files failed to offload, and why?”
  • “Start a bulk offload and show me the progress.”
  • “Cancel the bulk offload.”

See every action the assistant can take in the Abilities Reference.

Keep it safe

  • The assistant acts as the WordPress user you connect. Keep its Application Password private. You can revoke it at any time from the same Profile screen.
  • Only administrators can use these actions.
  • The assistant always uses your saved provider, bucket, and settings. It cannot change your settings or delete media.
  • Results do not include your access keys.
  • Offloading follows your retention policy, just like the Offload Now button. With Smart Local Cleanup or Full Cloud Migration, local copies are removed after upload. Choose Retain Local Files if you want to keep them.

Troubleshooting

  • The assistant cannot see the Media Offloader actions. Check that you have WordPress 6.9 or later, Advanced Media Offloader 4.7.0 or later, and an active MCP Adapter plugin. The connected user must be an administrator.
  • The assistant cannot connect. Check that the address ends with /wp-json/mcp/mcp-adapter-default-server and that the username and Application Password are correct. Application Passwords need a site that uses HTTPS.
  • A file failed to offload. Ask the assistant to list offload errors, or open the Media Overview page and click Download Errors CSV.
